Aether & Iron โ€” Characters Guide

Full Cast, Voice Actors & Crew Combat Abilities

Aether & Iron features a fully voice-acted cast of over 200 characters, from your core crew to the city's most dangerous faction leaders. This guide covers every major character, their voice actor, their role in the story, and โ€” for crew members โ€” their combat slot ability. Understanding your crew is just as important as upgrading your vehicle.

๐Ÿ”ซ

Gia Randazzo

โš”๏ธ Protagonist / Player Character ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Rhiannon Moushol

Gia Randazzo is the player character and the lens through which Aether & Iron's floating New York is experienced. A second-generation Italian-American smuggler who grew up in the Lowers, Gia is defined by her street intelligence, dark humor, and a deeply buried sense of justice that repeatedly gets her into trouble. She drives the narrative forward through three stat channels โ€” Hustle, Smarts, and Brass โ€” each of which reflects a different facet of her personality that the player develops over the course of the game.

Gia's parents were aether-dock workers who lost their jobs when the Heights barons automated the upper docks. Her father's subsequent involvement with the Copper Wire gang โ€” and his disappearance when Gia was fourteen โ€” is the wound at the center of her character. She doesn't talk about it unless she trusts you completely, and who she trusts is entirely up to the player.

โš™๏ธ Abilities

As the protagonist, Gia's abilities are entirely player-driven through stat allocation and equipment. However, a maxed-Brass Gia has a unique passive called Iron Nerve that makes her immune to the Shaken debuff applied by enemy intimidation abilities in combat.

๐Ÿ”ฌ

Nellie Ashbrook

โš”๏ธ Main Companion / Escort Target ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Kat Protano

๐ŸŽฎ Crew Slot: Engineer

Nellie is a scientist from the Uppers hired by a Heights industrial consortium to retrieve something from the Lowers โ€” something she won't explain in detail when she first hires Gia as her escort. She is brilliant, catastrophically unprepared for street life, and funnier than she intends to be. Her culture-clash dynamic with Gia generates much of the game's early comedy, but her intelligence and hidden knowledge of the aether conspiracy make her the most plot-critical character in the cast.

Nellie studied aetheric engineering at the Heights Institute, where she became one of three researchers with access to classified data about the aether material's true origin. When her two colleagues were killed in what the city officially called accidents, Nellie went to the Lowers to find the evidence buried there โ€” evidence that would explain why the city's barons are so desperate to control the aether supply.

โš™๏ธ Crew Ability

Emergency Repair โ€” Restores 15% of max vehicle HP as a free action once per combat. Passive: reduces Gadget item cooldowns by 1 turn.

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ

Cress

โš”๏ธ Crew Member / Street Fixer ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Dominica Ivy

๐ŸŽฎ Crew Slot: Wheelman

Cress is a non-binary fixer who operates out of the Lowers' most dangerous district, the Rust Quarter. They know everyone, owe everyone, and are owed by everyone โ€” a social web that gives Gia access to information and resources that money alone can't buy. Cress speaks in clipped, economical sentences and has a talent for sizing up situations faster than anyone else in the crew.

Cress's history with the Copper Wire gang โ€” the same organization connected to Gia's missing father โ€” is a thread that runs underneath their friendly professional relationship. Whether that thread pulls them together or apart depends on choices made in Act 2.

โš™๏ธ Crew Ability

Slipstream โ€” Reduces all forward movement AP costs by 1 for one full round. Passive: +10% vehicle Speed rating.

๐Ÿ’ฅ

Shiel

โš”๏ธ Crew Member / Gunner ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Daniel Cauvet

๐ŸŽฎ Crew Slot: Gunner

Shiel is a former Heights military weapons officer who left (or was expelled from โ€” he won't clarify which) the service after an incident he describes only as 'a difference of professional opinion.' He is precise, formal, and occasionally alarming in his enthusiasm for applied ballistics. Of all the crew, he integrates into Lowers life most poorly, but his combat effectiveness is unmatched.

Shiel's military background means he has contacts in the Heights security apparatus that no other crew member can access. Several mid-game missions become significantly easier if you've maintained a positive relationship with him โ€” he can call in favors that bypass otherwise mandatory combat encounters.

โš™๏ธ Crew Ability

Aimed Shot โ€” The next attack made this turn deals +25% damage and ignores 10 points of enemy armor. Passive: +5% damage to all attacks.

๐ŸŒ€

Sofia Marro

โš”๏ธ Crew Member / Wheelman Support ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Alice Hamora

๐ŸŽฎ Crew Slot: Navigator

Sofia is a former racing driver from before the city's aether-road regulations shut down competitive racing in the Lowers. She is loud, competitive, and constitutionally incapable of taking a route that isn't the fastest one available. Her knowledge of the Lowers' road network is encyclopedic and repeatedly saves the crew from ambushes.

Sofia's rivalry with a Heights-sponsored racing team is a recurring subplot. If you invest in her relationship arc, it culminates in a side mission that unlocks a unique vehicle chassis unavailable through any other means.

โš™๏ธ Crew Ability

Blind Spot โ€” Forces one enemy vehicle to skip its next movement action. Passive: Gia gains +1 AP at the start of each combat round.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Luca Ferretti

โš”๏ธ Crew Member / Intelligence ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Brent Mukai

๐ŸŽฎ Crew Slot: Lookout

Luca is a former information broker who accumulated enough debt to the wrong people that selling his services to Gia was his safest remaining option. He is nervous, precise, and genuinely terrified of physical confrontation โ€” but his intelligence-gathering abilities make the crew dramatically better informed than any enemy they face.

Luca's backstory is the most elaborately branched of the secondary crew members. His loyalty is not guaranteed โ€” if you make specific choices in Act 2, he will consider an offer from the antagonist's faction, and whether he stays or leaves depends entirely on how you've treated him.

โš™๏ธ Crew Ability

Intel Read โ€” Reveals all enemy vehicle stats, current HP, and intended actions for the next turn. Passive: Gia is never surprised in ambush encounters.

๐Ÿ”ฉ

Benny Vargas

โš”๏ธ Crew Member / Mechanic ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Voiced by Melissa Romero

๐ŸŽฎ Crew Slot: Mechanic

Benny is the crew's mechanic and the person who keeps Gia's car from falling out of the sky on a weekly basis. Sardonic, perpetually covered in aether grease, and possessed of a work ethic that puts everyone else to shame, Benny is the crew member most players end up appreciating most by Act 3. She has zero patience for people who mistreat machinery and considerable patience for everything else.

Benny's family runs the most respected independent repair yard in the Lowers. Her access to parts, schematics, and back-channel vehicle components is what makes advanced vehicle builds possible. Her relationship arc explores the tension between loyalty to family business and loyalty to the crew.

โš™๏ธ Crew Ability

Field Strip โ€” Removes one active negative status effect from your vehicle and converts it into 5 bonus AP. Passive: Vehicle upgrade weight limit increased by 10 units.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

๐Ÿ”น Who voices Gia in Aether & Iron? โ–ผ
Gia Randazzo is voiced by Rhiannon Moushol. Her performance anchors the game's noir tone, shifting between dry humor, vulnerability, and steel-nerved determination depending on the player's stat and dialogue choices.
๐Ÿ”น Who voices Nellie in Aether & Iron? โ–ผ
Nellie Ashbrook is voiced by Kat Protano. The chemistry between Protano and Moushol's performances is frequently cited by reviewers as one of the game's greatest strengths.
๐Ÿ”น Can crew members die permanently in Aether & Iron? โ–ผ
Crew members can be lost from your roster permanently through narrative choices, not combat. No crew member dies from a vehicle being destroyed in combat โ€” they are merely wounded and unavailable for the next mission. However, specific story decisions in Acts 2 and 3 can result in permanent departures or deaths.
๐Ÿ”น Which crew member is best for beginners? โ–ผ
Nellie (Engineer slot) for survival and Luca (Lookout slot) for information. Nellie's Emergency Repair keeps you alive, and Luca's Intel Read removes the uncertainty from tactical decisions. Together they form the most beginner-friendly crew configuration.
๐Ÿ”น How many crew members can I bring into combat? โ–ผ
Your vehicle has three crew slots: one primary (usually Gunner or Engineer) and two support slots (any combination). You select crew before each mission from the crew screen. All crew members not selected remain at the safe house and are unaffected by the mission's outcome.
๐Ÿ”น Is there romance in Aether & Iron? โ–ผ
Yes. Aether & Iron includes relationship arcs for several crew members with branching dialogue that can develop into romantic subplots depending on choices and stat checks. The developers have confirmed that these arcs affect certain late-game story outcomes.
